What is Bio-FUE Hair Transplant?

Bio-FUE (Bio-Follicular Unit Extraction) is an advanced hair transplant technique where individual hair follicles are harvested one by one from the donor area — typically the back and sides of the scalp — and transplanted to areas experiencing baldness. The 'Bio' prefix refers to the integration of Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) alongside the procedure, which nourishes the grafts and accelerates healing. Unlike older strip-harvesting (FUT) methods that leave a linear scar, Bio-FUE leaves no visible scar, requires no stitches, and allows a significantly faster recovery. Medistar Superspeciality Hospital, Akola runs the city's first dedicated Hair Transplant Unit equipped for this technique.

Who is a Good Candidate?

You may be a good candidate for Bio-FUE if you have stable hair loss (not actively progressing rapidly), sufficient donor hair on the back and sides of your scalp, and realistic expectations about the outcome. Androgenetic alopecia (pattern baldness), hairline recession, crown thinning, and bald patches from previous surgeries all respond well. Dr. Anshalika Agrawal conducts a detailed trichoscopy assessment before recommending surgery — not everyone needs a transplant. For early-stage hair loss, PRP therapy or prescription medications are often the better starting point.

What Happens During the Procedure?

On the day of your procedure, local anaesthesia is administered to both the donor and recipient areas — you are comfortable and awake throughout. Individual follicular units (groups of 1–4 hairs) are then extracted using a precision micro-punch tool. These grafts are stored in a growth-factor-enriched solution while recipient sites are carefully created in the balding area. Each graft is then placed at a precisely chosen angle and depth to mimic your natural hair growth direction. Larger sessions take 6–8 hours; smaller ones significantly less. You can eat, drink, and watch videos during the procedure.

The Recovery Journey

Most patients return home the same evening. Small scabs form around each graft in the first few days — this is completely normal and falls off within 7–10 days. Direct sunlight, heavy exercise, and aggressive hair washing should be avoided in the first week. At around 2–4 weeks, the transplanted hairs shed — called 'shock loss' — which alarms many patients but is a perfectly normal part of the hair cycle. New growth begins at 3–4 months, becomes clearly visible by month 6, and reaches full density by 12 months. The wait is entirely worth it.

Results: What to Realistically Expect

Bio-FUE results are permanent because transplanted follicles come from the back of the scalp — a zone that is genetically resistant to the DHT hormone responsible for pattern baldness. The transplanted hair grows, can be cut, coloured, and styled exactly like your natural hair. What sets Dr. Anshalika apart is meticulous hairline design — choosing the right angle, direction, and density for each individual's facial structure — which is what makes the final result look completely authentic rather than 'pluggy' or unnatural. Most patients describe the experience as life-changing.
